GUM LINE CORRECTION
While we typically think of teeth when it comes to cosmetic dentistry, it is also very common for people to feel self-conscious of a gummy smile. Gum line correction, also referred to as gum contouring, can reshape our patients’ gums through a method called grafting. This procedure is suitable for anybody who feels they show too much gum when they smile or are suffering from receding gums.
Receding gums can be the result of several different things, including gum disease, genetics or prescription medication. Gum line correction can succeed in not only recontouring your smile but also curing gum disease by restoring your gums and reducing risk to your teeth, roots and jawbone health.
WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT GUM LINE CORRECTION?
This procedure can resculpt your gums by either trimming excessive gum or using grafting to restore lost gum tissue. Gum contouring is often chosen in order to restore lost papillae. Papillae refer to the small triangle of gum between teeth. When this gum recedes, it can result in an unsightly dark triangle. This problem will become significantly less obvious when a gum line correction redistributes your gums more evenly across your smile.
IS IT PAINFUL?
Depending on the extent of your gum alteration, your pain will vary. Usually, patients are medicated during the procedure, banishing any discomfort and making you feel at ease. Your gums will likely feel very sensitive following the procedure, meaning your diet should be restricted to soft foods for the first few days to avoid irritation.
